The pre-WWII epic romance concerns a young Cambridge student (Rodan) and a budding fashion photographer (Portman). Their relationship is severed when he heads to Spain to fight fascism, and they are reunited later as she puts her life on the line for him. Cruz plays a gypsy friend of the photographer who figures in the intrigue.

John Duigan ("Sirens") will direct the independently financed project from his script.

Portman will do the film after completing the Anthony Minghella-directed "Cold Mountain." She will then star with Zach Braff ("Scrubs") in "Large's Ark," which Braff is directing. Rodan's credits include "Monsieur N" and Uli Edel's "Julius Caesar."

LOS ANGELES (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... s__clouds_) --- Natalie Portman, Penelope Cruz and Jay Rodan all have their "Head in the Clouds" for writer-director John Duigan. Shooting will start in Paris in December and then continue in Montreal until the end of February.

The project, an epic romance set against the backdrop of World War II that Duigan has been shepherding for several years, is being produced by Dakota Films and Remstar. "Clouds" is described as a love story centered in Paris in the turbulent years leading up to the war, culminating in the liberation of the city in 1944.

Portman will star as Gilda Besse, a young budding fashion photographer who gets involved with Guy Penrose (Rodan) only to see their relationship torn apart as Guy's political interests lead him astray. Cruz plays Mia, a gypsy whom Gilda befriends and takes in.


Portman, who will segue to "Clouds" after Anthony Minghella's "Cold Mountain," is repped by CAA and the Firm. Her last big-screen outing was opposite Hayden Christensen in "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones."

Cruz, also repped by CAA, just wrapped a role in the Bob Dylan starrer "Masked and Anonymous" for Intermedia Film, Spitfire Prods. and Marching Band Prods. She most recently starred onscreen opposite Tom Cruise in "Vanilla Sky."

Rodan is repped by WMA and the Firm. His debut film was the Kasi Lemmons-directed "The Caveman's Valentine." He's gone on to star in "The Triumph of Love" for Paramount Classics, "The Lost Battalion" for A&E and "Callas Forever" opposite Jeremy Irons, Fanny Ardant and Joan Plowright.

Duigan is repped by CAA. His previous directing outings include "Sirens," "Flirting," "The Year My Voice Broke" and "Lawndogs."

Regie bei der unabhängig finanzierten Heldenromanze wird http://german.imdb.com/Name?Duigan,+John führen; ein Mann mit dem Auge fürs Magische, wenn ich das sagen darf, siehe "Lawn Dogs".

"Head in the Clouds" spielt kurz vor dem 2. Weltkrieg in Paris und andernorts und endet mit der Befreiung der Stadt im Jahre 1944. Der junge Cambridge-Student Guy Penrose (Rodan) und seine Freundin Gilda Besse (Natalie), die am Beginn einer Karriere als Modephotographin steht, werden getrennt, weil er nach Spanien geht, um dort im Bürgerkrieg gegen das faschistische Franco-Regime zu kämpfen. Die beiden finden sich wieder, als sie ihr Leben für ihn riskiert. Cruz spielt eine Zigeunerin (man verzeihe die Bezeichnung; sie entspricht der politisch unkorrekten Vorlage), mit der sich Gilda anfreundet und die sie bei sich aufnimmt.

Nach dem Pariser Kurzfilm von Tom Tykwer und "Large's Ark" setzt Natalie also ein weiteres Mal auf Autorenkino. Das füllt auf wohltuende Weise die Abstände zwischen ihren vertraglich festgelegten Blockbuster-Attacken und dürfte eine Chance für Natalie sein, sich und uns zu beweisen, daß sie Charakterspiel noch immer so souverän beherrscht wie in Leon, BG, ABH und The Seagull, wenn das Buch sie nur läßt.

Natalie Portman and Penelope Cruz, two of Hollywood's hottest young actresses, will be in Montreal in early January to shoot the period drama Head in the Clouds.

The indie film, set in pre-World War II Paris, will be directed by British-born film-maker John Duigan, whose previous flicks include Sirens, Lawn Dogs and The Parole Officer. Duigan also wrote the script. Head in the Clouds will beginning shooting in Paris in December, but the vast majority of the filming will take place in Montreal.

Portman, 21, is best-known for her role as Queen Amidala in this year's Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. (Portman's co-star in Clones, Hayden Christensen, was in town in August, shooting the film Shattered Glass.)

The Jerusalem-born Portman has also appeared in Where the Heart Is and Anywhere But Here, and she made her debut in Luc Besson's 1994 thriller Léon (The Professional). She is currently wrapping up work on director Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain.

Cruz, 28, first made a splash as an unchaste nun in Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother, and the Spanish beauty has since starred in All the Pretty Horses, Vanilla Sky and Blow. She recently finished shooting Masked & Anonymous opposite Bob Dylan and is currently appearing in the new Almodovar film Tarantula, alongside Antonio Banderas.

In Head in the Clouds, Portman plays Gilda Besse, a young fashion photographer who falls in love with a Cambridge student, played by up-and-comer Jay Rodan. The relationship breaks off when he heads off to Spain to join the fight against the fascists. Cruz portrays Mia, a Gypsy who becomes Gilda's friend. The drama unfolds in Paris, beginning in the years leading up to World War II and ending with the liberation of Paris from the Nazis in 1944.

Rodan appeared in The Triumph of Love last year and is currently starring opposite Fanny Ardant and Jeremy Irons in Franco Zeffirelli's Callas Forever.

Head in the Clouds is produced by Dakota Films and Montreal-based Remstar, and it is Remstar's highest-profile production ever. The casting of Canadian actors and extras is being handled by Montreal's Elite Casting.

Natalie Portman thought previously to join the casting, but she might have step back.

Natalie Portman was supposed to play Gilda Besse, one mode photographer who falls in love with a student of Cambridge. The relationship is put to a serious test when the student leaves her to go fight fascism in Spain. They will be re-united later and the young woman will risk her life to help her lover. Penelope Cruz will play Mia, a tzigane who will become friend of the photographer. Actor Jay Rodan (CALLAS FOREVER) will play the student of Cambridge.

We don't know who will replace Natalie Portman in the role of Gilda Besse.

Theron in "Head in the Clouds"

Seit Anfang des Jahres brodelt es gewaltig in der Gerüchteküche. Der Grund: Die Besetzung von "Head in the Clouds". Eigentlich sollten Natalie Portman und Hugh Grant die Hauptrollen übernehmen. Doch Charlize Theron und Stuart Townsend waren anscheinend schneller.

Charlize Theron und Stuart Townsend kennen sich bereits. Im Thriller "24 Stunden Angst" spielten die Beiden ein Ehepaar. Und auch in "Head in the Clouds" dürfen sie wieder Gefühle füreinander zeigen.

Der Film handelt vom einem chaotischen Cambridge Absolventen (Townsend), der eigentlich nur ein glückliches Leben führen möchte. Doch die Geschichte lässt dies nicht zu: Erst bricht der Spanische Bürgerkrieg, dann der Zweite Weltkrieg aus. Zu allem Überfluss verliebt er sich auch noch unsterblich in die falsche Frau. Theron spielt die Fotografin, die das Leben viel zu sehr genießt, als dass sie sich an nur eine Person binden würde.

Neben Theron und Townsend haben auch Thomas Kretschmann und Penelope Cruz ihre Zusage zu dem Projekt gegeben. Cruz gibt eine spanische Widerstandkämpferin, deren Schicksal mit dem des Liebespaares verknüpft zu sein scheint.

Inszeniert wird "Head in the Clouds" von John Duigan ("The Parole Officer"). Die erste Klappe fällt schon Mitte März. Die Drehorte: Montreal, London und Paris.
